This winter has been colder and more snowy than any I can remember in a long time. We had 16 inches of new snow last thursday, blowing wind and bone chilling temperatures. This morning it was 5 degrees below zero with a wind chill of minus 20. It's also gone very slow with no winter hunting trip this year. BUT only 48 days to go!
The Lake Stares Field Trial Club will start the field trial season the last weekend of March. They'll need alot of luck to have the weather warm up enough to melt some of the snow. The Michigan Amateur Club will follow the first weekend of April. The Ruffed Grouse Field Trial Club, Beaverton Grouse Dog Club and the Lake States again will follow. April is a great month to run grouse trials in Michigan. The woodcockwill be back and the male grouse will be drumming.
The last weeekend of April is also the traditional opening of trout fishing season. At LoBank, the river is designated as a quality flies only stream and actually is open all year. The weather needs to warm though and once the water is between 45 and 50 degrees the first of the seasons hatches will begin.
First we'll see some EARLY STONES, then BLUE WING OLIVES and then DARK HENDRICKSONS. These spring hatches in front of LoBank create a frenzy of feeding brook and brown trout after a long cold winter.
April is such a great month!

I am waiting for late run-off conditions - the McCloud will peak in late May to Early July. I like your photos, but would like to see a larger photo of Lu?

Its been the dead of winter here and as soon as the snow melts I'll get some good pictures and post them
